Malay's are believed to have been developed off the Aseel's in India and were carried to England by traders and service men in the 1500's to 1800's. The Malay is an upright standing bird with the 3 convex curves from beak tip to tail tip. They are hard feathered with long strong thick legs, a thick heavy breast, a long strong neck, a broad heavy skull with protruding eyebrows and a strawberry comb. They are yellow skinned and lay dark brown eggs. Originally kept as a fighting bird they have become popular as an ornamental or show bird. A mature cock will weigh about 9 pounds and a hen about 7. Cocks are intolerant of other male chickens and will attack anyone or anything that goes near his hens. |
