PORTERFIELD EXOTICS

Black Spanish turkeys were bred in Europe as direct descendants of the
turkeys carried back from Mexico to Spain by early explorers and traders to
America in the 1500's. These birds were vastly bred and quickly spread
throughout Europe to be carried back to America in years to come by early
colonial settlers. They were very popular along the American East
coast colonies and were a major factor in the development of the many new
breeds to come over the few hundred years. They were crossed with the
Eastern Wild Turkey to achieve developing the Narragansett which then was
used to develop the ever popular Bronze. Due to the production
superiority of the newer breeds Black Spanish were soon to be used only as
ornamental birds or for bloodlines to develop new breeds from. Over
the years they have actually become somewhat smaller birds than they were as
they have not been selectively bred for size. Even though their size
makes them a bit less favorable as a table bird they do still have excellent
flavor and texture and are a good choice for a smaller family. They
continue to be one of the most popular ornamental varieties with their deep
black feathers with an iridescent green sheen. We have had these turkeys in the past and we have recently purchased a few poults of this breed and plan to establish a very small flock of these birds and produce a few poults from them. They are not expected to be a big seller for us but are worth preserving and we do expect to sell a few of them. We also can order these poults from our hatchery freinds if we get orders larger than we can fill. |
