A
well bred Royal Palm is perhaps the most beautiful of turkey breeds, with
it's white body properly marked with deep black accents and it's red and
blue head this breed is a sight to behold. The first
American Royal Palm turkeys appeared in a mixed flock of Black, Bronze,
Narragansett, and Wild turkeys on the farm of Enoch Carson in Lake Worth,
Florida in the 1920s. A similar variety known in Europe as the pied or
Black Laced White has been known throughout Europe since the 1700's.
These "Pied" turkeys were then selectively bred for specific pattern and
coloration to become the Royal Palm which was accepted by the APA in 1971 as
it's own breed. Due to it's smaller size the Royal Palm although
testing as one of the top performers in nutritious meat production is kept
and bred primarily as an ornamental bird. The Royal Palm lacks
the genetics to become a big performer as a market bird but is still an
excellent choice for small farms raising their own food birds. It is a
relatively hardy good flying variety which will forage for most of it's own
feed including weed seeds, insects, greens and small grains. These are
truly a beautiful addition to any homestead and are a smaller bird of above
average nutritional rating for consumption of the farm family. We have kept these beautiful birds in the past and are in the process of acquiring and raising a small flock of this breed for limited production. |
