The White
Mallard is a color mutation of the wild Flying Mallard, they are rather rare
in captivity and even more rare in the wild. In the wild the White
Mallard hen lacks the camouflage to hide while setting on her eggs and is
very likely to become prey for a hungry predator. The White Mallard
drake looks different from the norm and is a less likely choice of mate for
the standard hen Mallard. In captivity it is common for one drake to
breed to numerous hens and the white drake is much more likely to breed.
The chances of getting white ducklings increases greatly with a white parent
and two white parents is greater still.
White birds are usually preferred for food
production birds as they lack the pigment that colors the skin. The
dark pigments make the uncooked plucked bird less eye appealing to the
potential consumer. The Mallard is a tasty and commonly eaten duck but
is rather small and not the preferred duck of the duck meat markets.
The Wild Flying Mallard is the number one sport hunting duck but the White
Mallard is primarily raised as an ornamental bird.
